As Nigeria joins the global commemoration of the 2023 World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), Mrs. Akaninyene Uwemedimo, the wife of the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, has emphasized the crucial need for comprehensive support to breastfeeding mothers.
Addressing Uyo women during an awareness campaign to mark World Breastfeeding Week on Monday, August 7, 2023, at the Primary Health Center, Ewet Offot, Mrs. Uwemedimo highlighted the significance of providing effective support to breastfeeding mothers within the workplace.
She emphasized that breast milk offers the ideal nutrition containing all necessary elements for a baby’s first six months of life, with numerous immediate and long-term benefits that extend into the child’s growth stages.
Mrs. Uwemedimo, therefore, urged the women to follow the health workers’ guidance on proper breastfeeding and be good ambassadors in their neighbourhood.
Event facilitators acknowledged breastfeeding’s critical role in the overall health of both mother and baby, noting that the initial milk (colostrum) filled with antibodies protects the baby’s gut and prevents the transmission of bacteria and viruses.
The health workers provided valuable advice to nursing mothers, including tips for optimal breastfeeding: frequent nursing, proper latching, hydration, nutrition, avoiding pacifiers and bottle feeding, and ensuring adequate rest.
Other participants stressed the importance of greater breastfeeding support across workplaces to enhance global progress in breastfeeding rates.
The highlight of this year’s celebration with the theme; Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a Difference for Working Parents included presentation of gift packs to nursing mothers to encourage healthy lifestyles.
Distinguished attendees included Mrs. Regina Charles Udo, wife of the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism; Mrs. Joyful-Uwem Eyo, wife of the Chairman, Local Government Service Commission; Hon.
