UYO LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL FLAGS OFF BURSARY DISBURSEMENT PROGRAM TO SUPPORT INDIGENOUS STUDENTS’ EDUCATION

Uyo Local Government Council has taken a significant step to support the education of 393 verified students from the area who are pursuing higher education across various institutions nationwide through bursary payment.

The bursary disbursement was formally launched on Thursday, August 31, 2023, starting with students from the University of Uyo, at the Uyo Council Secretariat.

The Council Chairman Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, emphasised that this effort underscores the administration’s dedication to both education and the well-being of the students. He announced that the Local Government Council would cover the association dues for the benefiting students. Furthermore, deserving final-year students facing financial constraints will receive a project grant to aid their research work.

In line with Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE AGENDA, the Chairman highlighted the responsible use of resources to improve people’s lives. He also assured that arrangements will be made to reach out to students who couldn’t attend the launch event, utilising the contact details provided in their application forms.

The event also featured goodwill messages from various dignitaries, including Dr. Aniekeme Uwah, Dr. Promise Etim, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Amos Etuk, and the Leader of Uyo Legislative Council, Hon. Ubong Effiong. They praised the council chairman’s initiative and encouraged the students to manage the funds wisely, acting as positive representatives of the area.

Both students and parents expressed gratitude to the council chairman, acknowledging the significant impact of this benevolence on their academic pursuits.

Noteworthy attendees at the event included the Secretary, Uyo Local Government Council, Mr Ubong Udofia, Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Uyo Legislative Council, Hon. Stella Archibong, the Dean, College of Supervisors and Special Advisers, Uyo LGA, Mr Linus Effiong.

Others were Supervisor for Education and Manpower Development, Uyo Local Government Council, Mr Ekemini Bassey, Director for Social Development, Education, Information, Sports, and Culture in Uyo LGC, Mrs. Ifreke Okpon, Worldwide President, Uyo Students Association, Elijah Otuekong, and the Vice President, NANS Zone B, Ekanem Utibe, among others.

This bursary program stands as a commendable effort to promote education and empower the students for a brighter future.
