UYO LOCAL GOVERNMENT, CORPS MEMBER COLLABORATE TO BRING CLEAN WATER TO IKOT OFON IKONO

In a remarkable display of community commitment and collaboration, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Dr Chioma Vivian Ibekwe has collaborated with Uyo Local Government under the Chairmanship of Dr Dr. Uwemedimo Udo JP to address a pressing issue – access to clean water in Ikot Ofon Ikono, a rural community in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Dr Chioma Ibekwe, a Corps member serving in Uyo, thought about the project after witnessing the dire need for clean water in the community. The lack of reliable access to potable water has been a challenge for the residents of Ikot Ofon Ikono, leading to waterborne diseases and difficulties in daily life.

The project which is stationed at the Police Post, Ikot Ofon Ikono, Uyo aims to provide a sustainable source of clean and safe drinking water to the community.

Speaking on Thursday, October 5, 2023, during the handing over of the project to the community, the Chairman, Uyo Local Government Council, Dr Uwemedimo Udo JP praised Dr Ibekwe’s initiative and dedication to improving the lives of the people in Ikot Ofon Ikono.

He said, “We are proud to support this project, which exemplifies the spirit of community development. Access to clean water is essential for health and well-being, and we are committed to ensuring its success.”

Speaking about the project, Dr Ibekwe stated, “It was disheartening to see people in Ikot Ofon Ikono suffer due to the lack of clean water. I decided to collaborate with the local government when I learnt that they have this project in the pipeline to make a positive change in this community.”

She appreciated the Uyo Council Chairman for his commitment to seeing that the project was a reality before she passed out from the National Service programme.

Goodwill messages were received from special guests at the event including the Akwa Ibom State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Chinyere Ekwe, and the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko MacDon, who appreciated the Uyo Council Chairman for his support and sponsorship of the project which will make the environment conducive for men and officers of the law at the police post who are also a part of the community.

The Village Head of Ikot Ofon Ikono, Uyo, Eteidung Polycap Udoudo who sits as the Chairman, Ikono Ibom Clan Council of Chiefs expressed his gratitude for the project, on behalf of the community members, emphasising how it will positively impact their lives and the overall development of the area.

Present at the event to witness the commissioning of the project were, the wife of the Chairman, Mrs. Akaninyene Uwemedimo, Leader of the 7th Uyo Legislative Council, Hon. Ubong Effiong who led a delegation of the Councillors, Supervisors led by the Dean, Mr. Linus Effiong, Director for Work, Uyo LGC, Engr. Emmanuel Ekoh, and the Director for Finance, Pastor Victor John.

Others were the PDP Chapter Chairman, Hon. Tony Ekong, Chief-Elect of Ikot Ebido Oku community, Obong Iniekong Bassey, Zonal Inspector of NYSC, Uyo, Mrs. Anne Edoku, Local Inspector of NYSC, Mr John Ukoh, and the Assistant Director in charge of CDS, Mr Femi Festus, the Divisional Police Officer, Itam Division, CSP Nelly Martins Nyechi, and Corps members in the Medical and Health CDS Group, Uyo.

This collaboration serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through community-driven initiatives and partnerships.
