SCHOOLS REOPENING: UDOM’S AIDES SEEKS MORE COMMITMENT AMONG TEACHERS, STUDENTS

As all private and public primary and secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State resumed today, April 19, 2021 for the third term of 2020/2021 Academic Session, the Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Education Monitoring, Akparawa Udeme Udofia has called on teachers and students to give more of their time to service to justify government’s investment in the educational sector.

He made this charged while embarking on an inspections tour of select schools in Ibiono Ibom and Itu local government areas to ascertain the readiness of both teachers and students towards the work ahead.

Akparawa Udofia accompanied by Dr. Sarah Esitikot explained that they visited schools to ensure that learning has commenced in earnest so students can cover their academic timetable which has been truncated as a result of COVID-19 lockdown.

He emphasized on government’s commitment in giving students the best education money could buy, promising to do his best inline with governor Udom Emmanuel’s directive towards actualizing government dreams as well as improving on the quality of students that would be sent out.

Akparawa Udofia noted that the more efforts teachers put will bring the best result from students, which according to him is a pride of all teaches and a glory to Akwa Ibom state.

He, howewever, expressed worry with the poor attendance in some schools visited and sent strict warning to teachers under the state government employ to, as a matter of urgency resume their duties immediately, as failure to do so will attract serious sanction from the ministry.

He also advised students to put more efforts in their studies so as to come out with good grades that will guarantee their admisions into the university, emphasising that government is interested in their future as is evident in the payment of their examination fees.

Addressing the teachers in all the schools visited, the team emphasized on teachers’ punctuality, adherance to their primary duties as well as presenting themselves as role models to their students while also urging all Heads of Schools to ensure that the scheme of work is strictly followed.

At community secondary school Ikot Usen in Ibiono Ibom Local Government area,the team commended the Principal Mr Moses Bassey Ekanem , who recoreded a high turn out of students with all the teachers present and learning had fully commensed despite it being the first day of resumption.

The duo called on parents and guardians to release their children to school while ensuring that all necessary textbooks, writing materials and face masks are provided for them.

Akparawa Udofia used the opportunity to advise students, teachers and the general public to adhere to safety guidelines and measures laid down by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control NCDC, and other front line health institutions in order to completely eradicate COVID-19 saying adherence to laid down measures was the way to go.

The team further charged school authorities to ensure adequate provision of hand-washing facilities, hand sanitizers and thermometers, while ensuring that students, pupils and teachers comply with physical distancing within the school premises.

On the lingering reports of vandalization of school properties, the SA appealed to community leaders to act as watch dogs of government properties in their vicinity as stolen equipments will hamper effective teaching and learning in the schools.

Some of the schools visited where; Presbyterian School, Nsan, Government School, Ndan and Community Secondary School Ikot Usen all in Ibiono Ibom LGA and Community Secondary Commercial School, Ibiaku Itam in Itu local government area.
