The wife of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Patience Umo Eno, has advocated the adoption of modern cultivation methods and recycling of waste materials as some of the ways to preserve the environment against further degradation.
The Governor’s wife said this on Thursday, September 21, 2023, during the 8th anniversary celebration of Family Empowerment and Youth Re-Orientation Path-initiative (FEYReP), a Non-Governmental Organisation founded by wife of former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Martha Udom Emmanuel.
Pastor Patience Eno who was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare Dr. Ini Adiakpan, attributed the former First Lady’s commitment to service to her burning desire to better the lot of Akwa Ibom Citizens through various people-centered projects.
“For the women, you have to do a lot of adaptation. The traditional way of cultivation must give way to modern ways of cultivation. We now have dry season farming too and that is to cushion the effects of Climate change.
“The use of polythene has to be checked. Right from the home, we should learn to sort out refuse to separate the ones that can be recycled from the ones that can be burnt because those are key climate change issues,” she said.
The Governor’s wife congratulated the former First lady on the formal launch of Climate Change For All Initiative, as a subsidiary of FEYReP, to create awareness on global warming and praised her for impacting lives through FEYRep even after exiting office as Governor’s wife.
She also commended Dr. Martha Emmanuel for delving into issues of climate change, deforestation and conservation of the environment from erosion through the planting of trees and hybrid seedlings.
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State Pastor Umo Eno , represented by his Deputy, Dr. Akon Eyakenyi, who unveiled the Climate Action for All Initiative, said the venturing into Climate change by FEReP demonstrates the initiative’s interest in current global issues and activities targeted at saving the environment.
The Keynote Speaker at the event, Prof. Ibironke Olubamise, said climate change affects everybody, and charged all to be in the vanguard of mitigation and adaptation.
Earlier, the progenitor of FEYReP, Dr. Martha Udom Emmanuel, recounted the success story of FEYREP to include interventions in the areas of education, health, empowerment, GBV, drug abuse, housing, mentoring, agriculture, and the addition of the “Climate Change Initiative” to its existing programmes, to address issues of global concerns, while advocating for the planting of trees to mitigate the effects of climate change in the environment.
The event featured the unveiling of FEYReP Climate Action for All Initiative by the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, panel discussions and the empowerment of a cross section of Akwa Ibom people with work tools.
