The Member Representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ime Bassey Okon has been honoured by his kinsmen with the highest traditional sonship title, ‘AKPAN IKOT USEN’
The event took place Friday, January 12, 2024, at his Community Townhall, Ikot Usen, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Th high point of the investiture was when the village head of Ikot Usen, Etteidung Essien I. Umoh officially pronounced Rt. Hon (Barr) Ime Okon as ‘Akpan Ikot Usen’ (First son of Ikot Usen) after decorating him with the insignia and regalia of the new title. It was a confirmation ceremony to affirm the title which was bestowed on him by the community four years ago.
In his speech, the Village Head said, “In 2020, we gathered like this under the leadership of Late Etteidung Edem Udofia Akpan to confer on Rt. Hon Ime Okon the highest sonship title in Ikot Usen Community ‘Akpan Ikot Usen’. Today, it has pleased God to use me to decorate him accordingly and I dare not disobey the divine charge.”
The Royal Father said the title is deserving due to the Lawmaker’s numerous contributions to the development of the community and welfare of the people, right from when he was a local government transition Chairman, a two-term State Legislator representing Ibiono Ibom people and now as the voice for Itu/Ibiono Ibom people in the House of Representatives.
Accompanied by the Village Heads of Ibiaku Ikot Udom, Usuk Ibiaku, Ikpa Ikot Ubo and Use Ndon, Etteidung Essien Umoh charged the people to forthwith address the Federal Lawmaker as the ‘First Son of Ikot Usen’.
The royal father described the Legislator as a peaceful and worthy son of the community who has demonstrated sterling leadership qualities worthy of emulation by the youths and everyone.
The Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Gordon Etop Idung a former Commissioner of Information in the State, commended the organisers of the event and described the title as well deserved. He further extolled the exemplary character of the honoree from the time he was a practicing Lawyer long before joining mainstream politics.
“I want Ikot Usen to know they have an humble man who has been consistent with good works, distinguishing himself from other politicians. Humility is his sterling attribute. I admonish the people of Ikot Usen to emulate these good qualities. He has gone through many political phases and politics demand courage and bravery.”
Other dignitaries who graced the occasion presented goodwill messages and poured encomium on the Legislator who also holds the traditional title “Utenge Ibiono Ibom.”
In his response, the honoree, Rt. Hon Ime Okon who was accompanied by the wife, Deaconess Victoria Okon, announced that his first assignment as the ‘First son’ of the community is to unite everyone and make peace reign across group of three villages of Ikot Usen, Ibiaku Ikot Udom, Usuk Ibiaku, extending to the other two villages of Ikpa Ikot Ubo and Use Ndon.
“My first duty as the first son of Ikot Usen is to strive for peace to reign amongst the group of three villages. God will grant me wisdom to reconcile them and extend same to Ikpa Ikot Ubo and Use Ndon. I will set up a committee that will help in the selection of youths for skill acquisition. I will also make arrangements for sponsorship of indigent students in the University. I will reach out to the women in the first quarter of the year and I will strengthen Home Support Group to enable the group to support women in their various businesses.”
The Lawmaker called on all to join hands with him to build the Federal Constituency as the elections are over.
High point of the occasion was the decoration of the Lawmaker with the traditional regalia of the title and prayers were offered for his success in future endeavors.
Cultural dances and other presentations were displayed by women, youths and the children to spice up the occasion.
Dignitaries who graced the occasion include; Hon Dr. Iniobong Essien – Chairman, Ibom Airport Development Authority; Hon NsikakAbasi Ukobot -Transition Chairman Ibiono Ibom LGA; Obong Nsima Umoh alias ‘Abai- Ibiono’; Otuekong Godwin Okon – International President Ibiono Ibom Welfare and Development Union (IWADU); Mr. Bassey Bassey Okon – Chairman of the Planning Committee of the event; Mrs Ntiabong Ekong and other great sons and daughters of Itu and Ibiono Ibom LGAs.
