The Executive Chairman of Itu Local Government Area, Hon. (Barr.) Etetim Onuk has called on the people of Itu to take advantage of the ongoing registration of eligible voters, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He made the recommendation during a stakeholders meeting convened by the Commission’s Electoral officer in Itu Local Government. Speaking on the importance of the Continuous Voter’s Registration Exercise, Barr. Onuk said the Voter’s Card is the ticket for participation in democracy.
He therefore enjoined every Nigerian of Akwa Ibom origin or living within the State, who has attained the franchise age of 18 and above to endeavor to register and obtain a Voter’s Card, so as to have a voice in Nigeria’s democracy. Barr. Onuk who said the need to mobilize the people for the ongoing voters reregistration by INEC cannot be overestimated, appealed to stakeholders to help sensitize the people, calling on Elders, Traditional rulers and Honourable Councillors to join the campaign and ensure the people of Itu Local Government Area come out to register and resolve other related issues.
He argued that the registration would afford the people the opportunity to choose their leaders and representatives in future electoral exercises. The Itu Council boss pledged to assist the Commission by provide logistical support to ensure a successful exercise in Itu Local Government Area and charged the security agencies to provide adequate security for the official of the electoral commission, throughout the duration of the exercise. Meanwhile, Hon. (Barr.) Etetim Onuk has solicited for an enhanced synergy between the Executive and Legislature, while assuring them that as part of the ongoing redesigning, renovation and beautification of Itu Local Government Secretariat, the Legislative arm would be provided with a befitting Legislative Chamber for their activities.
He stated this during a Special Interactive Session with members of Itu Legislative Council. In his response, the Leader, Itu Local Government Legislative Council, Hon. (Barr.) Bassey Bassey assured the Council Chairman of their continued support and cooperation and pledged to remain partners in development and ensure a rebirth in Itu Local Government Area.
