Ikono Chairman bags National Most Performing Chairman Award

The Executive Chairman of Ikono Local Government Area, Hon. Nyakno Uwemedimo Okoibu has been conferred with the Award of the Most Performing Local Government Chairman in Nigeria at the 20th Nigerian Local Government Chairmen Merit Award.

He won the award at an event held at the National Merit House, Maitama, Abuja on Thursday, September 16, 2021, for his quality leadership through service delivery and accountability as the Executive Chairman of Ikono Local Government Area.

The panel of Judges and Nomination Committee of the Award chose him as one of the worthy recipients of the esteemed award for 2021, after he successfully passed through the various performance assessment stages; the verification of report from field officers, public opinion polls, responses from nominations on radio and television stations, and national dailies.

As should be expected from a Governor Udom Emmanuel led administration, three(3) of the twenty eight(28) most performing local government in Nigeria were from Akwa Ibom State. The other awardees from Akwa Ibom State were Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Hon.Dr. Uwemedimo Udo and Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Rt. Hon.Ubuo E. Uduo. Uyo Council boss received a car prize gift for his giant strides in Rural Water Supply.

Hon. Okoibu’s achievement has further proved that he has made exceptional contributions to grassroots development in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the award committee noted that Hon. Okoibu’s commitment to service delivery and outrageous sense of accountability, despite dwindling financial resources to the council and security challenges in the country is commendable hence he received a Generating Set for his achievement in rural power and renewable energy projects.

“You have showed responsible and accountable political leadership that has made a positive impact on the lives of ordinary people in your local government and Nigeria.

“Particularly, your outstanding achievement in INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWABLE ENERGY is commendable.

“We, therefore, packaged this award to celebrate excellence and enhance your present and future political endeavours, He said.

The event was chaired by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, while the Honorable Minister of Internal Affairs, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, was the Special Guest of Honour.

The award came on the heels of an appraisal by the Department of State and Local Government, under the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and the Akwa Ibom State Local Government Service Commission on the performances of Local Government Councils nationwide.

Chairman Ikono LGA

The roll call of projects executed by Hon. Nyakno Okoibu include: the restoration of electricity in Ikono Local Government Area after over a year of total blackout; the organization of the first-ever Ikono Sports and Cultural Festival and reconstitution of Ikono Football Club(Ikono FC); the award of educational scholarships to deserving Ikono indigenes and employment of over 40 casual workers to the local government and primary health care centers, the reduction of rents from N70,000 to N50,000 for residents at the Ikono low density housing estate; the reduction of marriage cost at the Marriage Registry from N23,000 to N13,000; the reduction of medical costs through subsidising medicines at the Ikono General Hospital; the groundbreaking for a state of the art signage at Edem Iyere, the boundary between Ikono and Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area; the construction of Welcome to Ikono signage at Ndiya Etok, resuscitation of closed motor parks as well as constituting various market committees to oversee trading in Ikono Local Government Area.

He also has in his impressive scorecard the grading of various rural roads, donation of an incubator to Ikono General Hospital, provisions of free Medicare services, amongst others.

The delegation of the Executive Chairman of Ikono at the awards ceremony in Abuja was made up of: The Secretary of Ikono Council, Obongawan Ofon Mike; the Leader of Ikono Legislative Council, Hon. Nsikak Ntok; the Dean of Supervisors, Hon. Mathew Robert; the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Comr. Nsisong Ntuk, the President of Ikono indigenes in Abuja, Elder Godwin Ekpenyong and a host of Ikono indigenes living in Abuja.
