…Warns against fetish oaths during LG Polls
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel has publicly referenced the recently launched attitudinal and moral reorientation dogma, Mkpó Amaa Change Initiative, warning political leaders in the state against administering secret oaths to chairmanship and councillorship aspirants to extract loyalty.
Speaking during the Inauguration of Chairmen and Members of Boards and Commissions at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo, on Friday, the Governor expressed displeasure over fresh reports of administration of fetish oaths on Chairmanship and Councillorship aspirants, by some stakeholders and warned that any aspirant fingered in the act would be immediately disqualified.
“Let’s keep a little bit of sanity in the system. We can do things differently; Mkpó Amaa Change. I have seen the signpost somewhere saying that ‘Mkpó Amaa Change.’ That is why as a Governor, I give power back to the people.
“Akwa Ibom, the era of Mbiam (fetish oaths) had gone. I promised the stakeholders, once we hear, even as a rumour, that you have sworn to fetish oaths, we will disqualify you. Take me to court”, he said.
He advised politicians in the state to allow the will of God to prevail in the forthcoming Local Government polls, saying “God does not act on sentiments. Let’s live a decent and normal life.”
The event which was graced by top government functionaries across the state, also featured the swearing-in of Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of Eket and Ibeno Local Government Councils.
